The First Birthday Party Was For Everyone… Except the Birthday Boy
When I was planning my son’s first birthday, I found myself focused on all the things most parents focus on:
The decorations.
The food.
The dessert.
The entertainment.
The guest list.
All the things that make a party feel perfect.

But then I realized, the birthday was mostly being planned around the adults and older kids.
My son was turning one. He wasn't going to care about the taqueria or the decorations. Honestly, he wasn't even going to care about the entertainment I got for the kids because he was too young to enjoy any of that.
At some point during the planning process, I came across soft play rentals.
I loved the idea of having a dedicated space where he could play & enjoy his celebration. After all, he was the guest of honor.
But at the time, I couldn’t find an option that felt like it fit the theme I had planned, and honestly, it felt hard to justify the extra expense for a single day.
So I did what a lot of moms do.
I got creative.
I put together a small DIY play area for him. I mean really small. A tent and some campfire toys. It worked out just fine, everyone had fun, and we celebrated a wonderful first year.

Looking back though?
I wish I would have included a special play area for him.
Not because the day wasn’t still very special & fun.
It was.
But looking back on memories from that day, the moments that stand out aren’t the decorations or the party favors.
They’re the moments of him playing.
Exploring.
Discovering.
Being exactly what he was, a curious one-year-old experiencing the world around him.
And that’s when I realized something. The party had been planned for everyone.
For the adults.
For the family.
For the older kids.
But hold on... Don’t get me wrong, first birthdays are just as much a celebration for the parents as they are for the child. Surviving that first year is no small accomplishment!
But if I could go back and do it all over again, I would invest a little less on the details the adults notice and more on creating experiences my son would truly enjoy.

Planning a First Birthday Party?
If you’re currently planning a first birthday, second birthday, or toddler celebration, my advice is simple:
Think about what your little one will enjoy most and what will make the best memories!
Sure, the decorations matter. The photos matter.
But the memories often come from the moments in between. The laughter, the exploration, and the joy of simply being a kid.
Those are the moments worth creating.
